I was grinning ear to ear as I walked out of the train station, the sun streaming through the clouds, effortlessly illuminating the city of canals. I was instantly devastated that we were only there for one day. Trenitalia offer an amazing 2 for 1 deal when travelling on a Saturday. We booked tickets from Milano Centrale to Venezia S.Lucia. The tickets cost €75 for both of us return! The only minor annoyance with the 2×1 is only selected train times support the offer. We set off at 9:30am and left Venice at 7:50pm.
Most people use the water taxis. We thought walking and getting lost it this beautiful city would be so much more fun! We navigated through the labyrinth of alleyways and canals to find a beautiful canal-side restaurant looking on to the Rialto Bridge. After our feast of pizza and prosecco the day would not be complete without some delicious Nutella gelato from a nearby gelato stand.
I was eager to soak up the last remaining beams of sunshine ( it was October after all ). The sun was still shining bright which made the perfect backdrop as I boarded our gondola to cruise through the canals of Venice , all the while being serenaded by a gondolier. Definitely one of the most romantic cities in the world …
We got lots done in one day, but not enough, Venice left me longing for more and I am positive I will return, next time for longer.
Here are some of my favourite moments from Venice – the City built on water.
